Want to know who qualifies as a military veteran in South Africa? If you have fought in the Korean War (1950-1953) or the Second World War (1939-1945), you can apply for the SASSA War Veterans grant to get R2,200 per month.

Who Qualifies for the War Veterans Grant in 2024?

To be eligible for the SASSA War Veterans grant, one should follow these rules:

• Must have South African citizenship or permanent residency.
• Must be older than 60 years or disabled.
• Must live in South Africa.
• Should not be a beneficiary of any other social relief grant.
• Must have fought the Korean War (1950-1953) or the Second World War (1939-1945).
• Should not be cared for in any state institution.
• Should not be earning more than R 86 280 (R8 070 per month) if single and R172 560 (R16 140 per month) if married.
• If you are single, your asset’s worth should not exceed R 1 227 600. For married couples, the limit is R 2 455 200.
• Must pass the SASSA means test.

How to Apply for a SASSA War Veterans Grant Pension?

The War Veterans Grant application process will be completed in the SASSA office. You can not apply online as SASSA has no means to apply for the War Veterans Grant online.

If you are too old, disabled, or facing any issue that does not allow you to visit the SASSA office, you can send someone from your family to apply for the grant.

Check the SASSA office timings and visit on a working day. Now ask the SASSA officer to provide you with the application form.

You need to fill out the form with SASSA officials or officers. You can not take this form to your home to fill it out. So make sure you stay there and fill out the form in the officer’s presence.

Now attach all the required documents like proof of military service and proof of war serving in the Second World War or Korean War.

Submit the application form to the officer and get a stamped dated receipt from SASSA. This is your proof that you have applied for the SASSA War Veterans grant.

Required Stuff for War Veterans Grant Pension Application

• A 13-digit bar-coded South African ID card. If you do not have any ID, you need these alternative documents:
  • You need to sign an affidavit in the presence of the Commissioner of Oaths who should not be a SASSA official.
  • An attested sworn statement from the traditional leader, councilor, minister of religion, social worker, or school principal.
  • A proof that claims you have applied for ID at the Department of Home Affairs.
• Your certificate of war service to prove you have served in the military.
• If you are disabled or older than 60 years, you need to provide medical proof that will prove that you can not work.
• A proof of your spousal relationship. In case if you do not have the marriage certificate, you can provide the following document:
  • Affidavit where you will claim that you are married.
• If you are single then provide an affidavit to prove you are single.
• If you are divorced, you need to provide your divorce order.
• For a deceased spouse, you need to submit the death certificate of your spouse.
• If you are unemployed then you need to provide your previous employer’s discharge letter or your Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) blue book.

How to Check My War Veterans Grant Payment Status?

To check your War Veterans grant payment status, you need to visit your bank branch or ATM. Now enter your SASSA card into the ATM and proceed with your transaction by entering your PIN.

Now press the “Check Balance or Balance Inquiry” button. After that, the ATM screen will show your payment status. Check the SASSA balance and withdraw your cash if you want.

SASSA War Veterans Grant Payment Dates 2024

The War Veterans grant payment date is very important. You have to check your payment dates before you collect your payment. Here are the payment dates for 2024:

SASSA will pay R2,200 per month to all the approved applicants. The payment will increase from 1 October 2024. The new payment will be R2,210 per month.

When Will My Grant Application Be Approved?

War Veterans grant applications can take up to 90 days to complete. You will have to wait for your approval. Once you get the grant approval, you will be notified by an official letter.

The letter will mention all of your payment details, payment dates, and from where to collect your grant cash.
