Who Qualifies for a Care Dependency Grant in 2024?

Below is the complete list of Care Dependency grant eligibility criteria in 2024:

  • The child must be under the age of 18.
  • The child must have a severe, permanent disability as confirmed by a medical assessment.
  • Both the applicant and the child must be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees.
  • The income of the caregiver (if single) or the combined income of the caregiver and their spouse (if married) must fall below a specified threshold, as determined by SASSA.
  • The grant must be applied for by the primary caregiver of the child, who could be a parent, legal guardian, or another individual responsible for the child’s care.
  • A medical or assessment report from a certified medical practitioner is required to confirm the severity and permanence of the child’s disability.
  • The child and the caregiver must reside in South Africa.
  • The child should not be in a state institution receiving care and support, except in cases where the caregiver contributes towards the cost of care.

SASSA Care Dependency Grant Application Process 2024

To apply for CDG, the applicant has to visit the nearest SASSA office. If the applicant is ill, disabled, or unable to visit the SASSA office, they can send someone from their family on their behalf.

  1. Go to the nearest SASSA office and request the Care Dependency Grant application form.
  2. Fill out the application form in the presence of a SASSA officer.
  3. If you encounter any difficulties while filling out the form, the SASSA officer is obliged to assist you.
  4. After completing the form, submit it to the SASSA officer
  5. Ensure you receive a dated, stamped receipt as proof of your application submission.
  6. There is no fee to apply for the CD Grant.
